Our Language, Cultural Orientation and Readiness for Employment (LCORE) class is a thirty-six session, eighteen-week program designed to teach practical English language skills as well as the skills necessary to facilitate cultural transition in the U.S. These skills include completing job applications, writing checks, filling a prescription, reporting a problem to the apartment office, and interviewing for a job.
Exodus offers LCORE classes in community spaces, including the Southport Library and Chin Center, as well as private spaces, including apartment clubhouses and individual residences. Exodus volunteers also provide one-on-one tutoring and in-home small group classes as needed.
With Basic English acquisition, clients are more likely to sustain employment and become self-reliant earlier in the resettlement process. The program also encourages clients to develop relationships and interact with their classmates and community.
Exodus also offers two Intensive English Language Classes that are held four days per week in eight-week cycles. These classes are conducted at the Exodus office. As part of the training, clients learn to ride the public bus to and from class and also participate in field trips to support the use of newly acquired language skills.
