Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Exodus Refugee in Bloomington, Indiana! Volunteers play a vital role in helping our newest neighbors rebuild their lives in Indiana. Whether you want to support adults, teens, or behind-the-scenes operations, we have meaningful ways for you to get involved.


How to Get Started

Read through the options below and choose the one that best matches your interests, availability, and commitment level.

2. Sign Up for a Volunteer Training

In this 90-minute interactive session, you’ll:

  • Learn about Exodus Refugee’s mission and the people we serve

  • Gain context on forced migration and resettlement

  • Explore the values that guide our work and your role as a volunteer

  • Receive role-specific preparation for the opportunity you choose

  • Ask questions, meet others, and feel confident about getting started

You can view upcoming sessions and sign up here. Once you’ve signed up, we’ll follow up via email and text with next steps—including background check info if needed. If none of the sessions work for your schedule, text our volunteer coordinator LJ at 317-435-1907 with your availability and she’ll be in touch.


Current Volunteer Opportunities

Community Connector (Adults)

Build a one-on-one connection with an adult to practice conversational English, work toward personal goals, and support their adjustment to life in the U.S.
This opportunity takes place out in the community—you might spend time in their home, take a trip to the library or grocery store together, or practice conversation at a local coffee shop or international restaurant.

Commitment: Meet once a week for a minimum of 6 months.


Community Connector (Young Adults)

Support a young adult (ages 15–22) as they navigate U.S. culture, school life, and personal growth. This is a meaningful opportunity to form cross-cultural friendships and make a lasting impact.
This opportunity takes place out in the community—you might spend time in their home, or go out for ice cream, a meal, or a walk.

Commitment: Meet once a week for a minimum of 12 months.


‍‍English Teacher (Virtual)

Provide English instruction to adults via Zoom. You’ll be supported by staff educators, with training and curriculum provided.

Class Times: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 1:00–2:30 PM or 3:00–4:30 PM
Commitment: Teach one class per week for a minimum of 6 months.


Legal Volunteer (Asylum Application Prep)

Support our legal team by organizing documents and preparing materials for asylum applications. This is a behind-the-scenes role that helps families secure safety and stability.

Note: This opportunity is for volunteers with prior experience in legal writing.
