Language, Cultural Orientation, and Readiness for Employment(LCORE)
Photographer: Katie BasbagillLanguage, Cultural Orientation and Readiness for Employment (LCORE) is an eleven week program designed to teach a set of skills needed to successfully integrate into the culture. These skills have been incorporated into the lesson plans and include such activities as completing job applications, writing checks, filling a prescription, reporting a problem to the apartment office, and participating in a job interview. Exodus offers more than eleven classes each week at two main sites located near the clients we serve: Southport Library and the Lakeside Pointe Clubhouse. Exodus also provides in home group classes for Iraqi women and Karenni women as well as others who are unable to attend the large group classes.
With Basic English acquisition clients are more likely to sustain employment and become self-reliant earlier in the resettlement process. In addition to increased proficiency in English, the program has also helped clients develop relationships and interact with their community. Clients are encouraged to speak in English only during class so those from different backgrounds can work together.
“Learning to speak another language can be stressful, time consuming, and confusing for adults. The needs of newcomers are vast and their ability to handle the complex world of the United States is limited by the amount of English they know and their familiarity with the culture. Learning to speak English is one of the first steps they can take to get control of their lives” (Making It Real, Tacoma House Training Project, Alysan Croydon 2005). The following is a sample of the curriculum used in class sessions.
